Hi. My name is Mariko. I’m a 40 year old half-Japanese Canadian who looks younger on the outside than she does on the inside.

For six years I ran the female gaming site Gamerwife.com, but after taking a break for a couple of years I decided to give blogging another try with a new focus.

I’ll admit that it took a VERY long time for me to develop my own sense of style, hindered by high-school hangups, body-image issues and general cluelessness about how to wear clothes without them wearing me.

I’m petite, short-waisted and I have giant thighs and calves thanks to 5 years of hardcore figure skating training (don’t get excited, I was never any good and I never even learned to do an Axel). I also have what Adore Delano so delicately refers to as ‘hog-body’: I wasn’t even aware I could have something resembling a waist until I tried pilates for the first time at 27!

And, like most of us, I’ve struggled with my weight and body image for my whole life. I’ve tried calorie restricted diets that triggered disordered eating, believing that I was still meant to look like I did when I was 15. And then, finally, after my last brush with diet culture I decided to call it quits.

I like my body. It’s squishy and broken in places, but it’s all I’ve got and I’m tired of thinking I should hate it. Style isn’t about hiding your ‘flaws’. It’s about celebrating and embracing what is unique about you.

And so, in my return to the bloggosphere, I’ve decided to share some of my hard-won insights into style and beauty. I’m not part of the online “Beauty Community,” so my opinions here will be more about classic techniques and ingredients than about the latest trends or tutorials. I’m also a giant nerd, so a lot of my style posts will include nerdy apparel and accessories.

The looks I want to bring you are laid-back, easy to wear, dripping in personal style and something everyone from 14 to 40 can wear. (Or, 40 going on 14, in my case).
